Gatecast Bonus 7 – Burn Notice

avatar For the final bonus episode we are watching and discussing the Burn Notice season two finale Lesser Evil which has Michael Shanks as a guest star playing Michael Westens nemesis Victor, the episode also features Tricia Helfer. In this episode the season arc concludes as Michael goes on the offensive against the Management and their operatives in an attempt to win his freedom.

Michael Shanks only appeared in four episodes of Burn Notice playing the former spy Victor who is now the operative of the Management tasked by his handler Carla (Tricia Helfer) to corral Michael and convince him to play ball. Of course in Burn Notice the plot is full of twists and turns and it was Victor who was often pivotal in setting events in motion by appearing in the right place at maybe the wrong time. The finale of the second season finally gives us plenty of interaction between Victor and Michael which is full of good dialogue and acting from both performers and provides both drama and tension with lots of action. Carla was a recurring character in the second season and Tricia is always a delight to watch perform on screen, she was able to play the “bitch” with flare and style putting Michael in his place time and time again with a ruthlessness few could match and between Tricia and Shanks we got two very good guest stars this year. As always Gabrielle (Fiona), Bruce (Sam) and Sharon (Madeline) provide the strong support a complex spy/action drama requires, each of them brings something to the story which allows Jeffrey (Michael) to remain center stage and work his magic.

We can highly recommend Burn Notice, it’s just finished it’s sixth season and combines action, humour and drama with a spirit that in a small way echoes some of the 80’s serials as the “heroes” struggle against overwhelming odds making the most of every day items to fight off drug dealers, spies and simply some bad dudes.

Gatecast Bonus 6 – The Simpsons

avatar2 Richard Dean Anderson guest stars in Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore a season seventeen episode of the animated comedy The Simpsons. He plays himself in a story which involves a Stargate SG1 convention in Springfield and the over enthusiastic attentions of two devoted MacGyver fans with the aid of some rope and a hammer. During the fun and games Mr Burns has outsourced the nuclear power plant to India and Homer as the sole union member who gets to retain his job is sent overseas to run the facility with some unexpected consequences.

The Simpsons is well known for making full use of it’s famous guest stars playing themselves and in this case spinning a Stargate and MacGyver tale around Richard Dean Anderson is inspired as it also pokes fun at the culture of fandom a few years before it really became well I guess mainstream and accepted in mass media. RDA has serious fun sending up his MacGyver persona the role which made him a global celebrity in the hit series. The second story in the episode follows Homer as he moves to India to run the outsourced nuclear power plant, a healthy dose of satire aimed squarely at the US and a few other societies that are pricing themselves out of manufacturing and maybe even seeing it as beneath them.

Next week should be the final bonus episode of this mini-break from dedicated Stargate episodes with a Burn Notice episode “Lesser Evil” featuring Michael Shanks as a guest star. Gatecast Bonus 5 – MacGyver

Welcome to the fifth bonus episode from Gatecast in which we are going to cover the Richard Dean Anderson series MacGyver. The format is pretty much the same as what we do for a standard episode of the show so it includes a commentary on the fifth season episode Live and Learn which has a familiar guest star in the shape of Christopher Judge. We’ve also included a little background information on both RDA and MacGyver but by no means are we experts and there is conflicting information on the web.

MacGyver premiered in the US in October 1985 on the ABC network and ran for 7 seasons with an additional 2 TV movies and became a world wide hit making RDA a global celebrity. Christopher Judge only made this one appearance on the show but if you go through the series credits you’ll see plenty of actors and crew that appear in this and the later Stargate shows.

Episode 160 SGA Thirty Eight Minutes

avatar2 Thirty Eighty minutes is the length of time a wormhole will remain active without serious manipulation via huge amounts of energy to sustain it so when a puddle jumper is trapped in a space gate and partially within the event horizon the clock is ticking. To make matters worse Sheppard has been bitten by some sort of giant instinct which has disturbingly similar traits to the Wraith by feeding on his life force when it is damaged and even attempts to free the ship may implode it’s power core and the energy will feed back to Atlantis with catastrophic results.

Thirty Eights minutes is a very good episode to have in the first season of any scifi show, we get plenty of character development as well as action and brings in more secondary characters who may or may not been seen again and if so only seasons later. This episode also lays a lot of the practical groundwork for the emergence of the Wraith which went hand in hand with the genetic manipulation the Ancients did in the Pegasus galaxy.

Sheppard doesn’t really have much to do whilst strapped to the bulkhead of the jumper but is the focal point of the events onboard and also in the events on the Wraith world they visited, it was there that they realised that the “mountain” had been a rather large space ship which had pulled up it’s roots and flew away.

We also get introduced to Dr Kavanagh played by Ben Cotton, he is written as a annoying individual and played wonderfully as such and of course Dr Radek Zelenka my personal favourite character from Atlantis played to a tee by David Nykel. The only really strange piece of the story is the clash of cultures between Weir and Halling although that was probably a ham fisted attempt to strengthen the events in the following episode.

Episode 159 SG1 Zero Hour

 Zero Hour offers up two pretty good story lines, we have the loss of SG1 on an alien world and those consequences as well technology taken from Anubis being used by other System Lords in this case the one and only Ba’al who makes an appearance and pretty much proves he is a bit of a peacock or simply an excellent example of a system lord.

Meanwhile an alien plant has run riot and over a few days has spread like wildfire causing power issues which prevents the use of the gate even if Jack was willing to deal with Ba’al there and then. The use of Camulus as the focus of Ba’al’s desires works well allowing the SGC to explore an Ancient facility (offscreen) and while it proves troublesome in the short terms pays off in the long term and allows his story to wrap up nice and neat even though we don’t see the consequences.

The adventures in horticulture by Dr Lee provides the humour and twists around the presidential story quite nicely along with the character of Gilmor who is in a way our eyes on Jack and the SGC and lets not forget the two ambassadors who are there purely to get a laugh.

I like the red bunting.

When you come to think about it there is a lot going on in Zero Hour and it all fits together perfectly, perhaps one the best episode of this season even though not that much happens and in this respect I got echoes of some of the more classic episodes of M*A*S*H that every now and again did something a little different.

Episode 158 SGA Hide And Seek

 A game of hide and seek by a couple of the youngsters in the city leads to the release of an energy based entity which feeds on the power sources of the city and even the energy generated by living beings. McKay as he is finds a new toy which leads to all sorts of bother as he once again leaps before looking but long term it pays off via an unexpected show of courage on his part.

Hide And Seek is an interesting episode to have after the uber feature premiere, it perhaps reflects the average budget of an episode of Atlantis as well as providing both the story and the viewers with an idea of how truly vast the city is and how long it will take to explore let alone understand everything that the Ancients left behind. We get some great moments between Sheppard and McKay as well as discovering the fact that having a large civilian population isn’t really going to work both for the city and the series itself.

He’s a good boy really.

To be honest there isn’t a lot to say about this episode, it’s a typical scifi season 1 effort neither good nor really bad just there but they have already got the humour down pat which will pay off through out the five years of the show.

Episode 157 SG1 Lockdown

 In orbit the wreckage of the alien invasion fleet threatens the International Space Station but some nifty work by the resident cosmonaut saves the day but then the SGC loses contact with the station. Later a Russian Colonel is assigned to the SGC under the agreements with the various nations that have been let into the secret and he requests SG1 but General O’Neill rather abruptly smacks him down. The Russian later collapses and a chain events begin leading to a Lockdown/Foothold situation as the humans attempt to hold out while searching for the entity which can possess the bodies of humans.

Lockdown is a decent attempt to continue the Anubis storyline even allowing for the destruction of his fleet but as we know he is only partially corporeal so becoming some sort of energy based life form makes a lot of sense. The bottle show nature of this episode also works well, being located in the standing SGC sets will save money but also works to give us the feeling of confinement something the personnel of the base are having to deal with.

Alexi Vaselov

We have some good banter between the main characters and the introduction of a new doctor which was essential, the loss of Janet left quite a big gap in the running of the facility and well all scifi shows need a good doctor it’s kinda written in stone.  There is also a familiar face as Aaron Pearl returns to the show playing a Major after playing the young Lt Hammond in the episode 1969.

There were some technical issues  this week, we lost the first recording of SG1 Lockdown so had to do a rerun which is never quite the same, alas we lost part of the second recording of Lockdown as well before finally getting it in the can. I had to role back a release of the recording program and all has been well since then but then when do you update to the latest release, the trust has gone. Some creative cutting and pasting has given us an episode that is in sync despite some gaps in our coverage which have filled so enjoy and as always let us know what you think.

This weeks promo was from the Flash Pulp podcast, a creative outlet for thrice weekly pulpy type audio fiction/drama, very entertaining and a good community. Next week we are going back to Atlantis and covering the episode “Hide and Seek” so comments will be well received for inclusion in it’s feedback segment so keep posting on the various portals it really makes everything worthwhile.

Episode 156 SGA Rising

 Research in to the former outpost of the Ancients in the Antarctic continues and Daniel discovers the location of the Lost City or at least an eight symbol address which will gate them to another galaxy, perhaps the original home of the Ancients or the hoped for Atlantis. Weir now no longer in command of the SGC heads up the expedition with a military contingent but she has civilian oversight and initially all goes well until power issues forces early exploration of a new “phone book” of gate symbols. The expedition finds friends and makes enemies but there is no way home so exploring this new galaxy is the only way to find Ancient power sources and technology in which to enhance the city of Atlantis and save not only themselves but both galaxies.

SGA Rising is a brilliant series opener, it obviously benefits from the 7 years of work and experience from the Stargate SG1 people both from behind and in front of the camera but you really can’t ask for anything more to kick off a new show. There is humour, action and drama all wrapped up in a very high standard of production making full use of the newest HD camera technology while using tried and trusted techniques when required.

Ok lets not try to be too specific:)

It would be easy to try to mirror this new batch of characters with those that came before them but the show simply feels fresher and certainly a much younger looking cast giving the show a more action orientated look to it but it’s still very much Stargate. Rising was broadcast as an extended feature in the US and Canada while the UK had it shown in two parts, the episode is offered in it’s extended format on the DVD and Blu-ray with a commentary by Brad, Robert and Martin. 

The casting of Robert Patrick as the commander of the military was inspired  he has the chops to do the role without breaking a sweat and carries off the hard ass Colonel role easily and offers just enough to get you involved before as a main guest stars he steps aside for the long term cast to take over. In that respect getting David Hewlett to reprise his McKay role makes so much sense it’s amazing it wasn’t really their initial plan but who else could have played this role and what other character traits would you want to let everyone else bounce off of.

Episode 155 SG1 New Order Part 2

 Thor returns to Earth and picks up the frozen Jack and the cool Tealc and heads to the new Asgard homeworld in the hopes that the Ancient knowledge held in Jacks head will help devise a defence once and for all. Meanwhile Fifth is playing mind games with Sam both to punish her betrayal but also venting his own immature rage against the one that spurned him. A showdown is imminent and armed with technology created by Jack who once revived has no real idea what it is or how it works the defence of the Asgard begins even if it means sacrificing Sam.

New Order Part 2 was aired as a separate episode in the UK but was part of the feature presentation of the season opener in the states. We have three stories ongoing all of which get a decent amount of screen time both to develop and for the characters to play their part, the Asgard find a solution to their long term problem with the replicators, Sam is saved although released is perhaps a more accurate term and the system lords and by extension Ba’al are put aside for another day. The request for asylum by Camulus comes out of the blue and of course Goa’uld rarely do anything that doesn’t serve a purpose, we’ll find out that purpose in due time.

It’s like looking in a mirror

New Order Part 2 is a very satisfying conclusion to the season premiere, we get solutions to the problems which make some sense while setting up potential problems in the future. The changes in the SGC and SG1 are significant but again they make a lot of sense especially given RDA’s limited time on set during the last season and saving the planet is a young persons game:)

Episode 154 SG1 New Order Part 1

 Stargate SG1 season 8 kicks off in the aftermath of the attack on Earth by Anubis. Jack is still a popsicle buried deep in the Ancient outpost under Antarctica and the SGC operations are suspended as Elizabeth Weir overseas operations while conducting multi-national negotiations for the purpose of clarifying the use and ownership of the technology. SG1 are lobbying for use of the gate but a compromise is reached which allows Sam and Teal’c to take the cargo ship and search out the Asgard at the last battle site with the replicators leaving Daniel and Weir to deal with three visiting System Lords.

This is a welcome return to television for Stargate SG1, there was a brief period of time when season 7 was to be the last and the story concluding with a dvd/tv feature film but it’s continued popularity and profitability won out and it returns to Scifi hand in hand with it’s spin off series Stargate Atlantis.

Halloween all the time.

New Order picks up in the chaos surrounding the SGC, America and the nations who have been let in on the secret of the Stargate when a twist in the tale is presented as three System Lords come to negotiate and deal with an Earth capable of defeating Anubis and thus kicking their collective asses as well. As Daniel and Weir play ping pong with a bunch of arrogant and condescending aliens Sam and Teal’c reach out to Thor and discover the Replicators are now free and the war has once again erupted, everything is in flux.

Surprise!

Part 1 of New Order is chock full of goodness but lacks that little spark despite some great dialogue with the System Lords and action with the Asgard and Replicators, the events will and do ratchet up in the second part of the premiere as pressure is applied to both the SGA and the new Asgard homeworld which is now under serious threat. It may have been a better option to make this a feature release as with the DVD as our take on the first part is a little dry but it’s done now but as always let us know what you think, the plan is to release the SGA premiere as an extended release rather than chop it up but if you prefer two sub 1 hour releases that is an option.

Stargate SG1 Season 7 Wrap Up Show

Welcome to our wrap up show for the seventh season of Stargate SG1.

It’s been a fantastic season of scifi television with humour, drama, suspense and thrills from SG1 and the SGC along with the enemies and allies in this and other galaxies. The Gatecast itself has had it’s ups and downs especially in terms of the website, feeds and hosts so it hasn’t been smooth sailing so we are thankful for everyone who has stuck with us and touchwood we can tempt those that let us float away to come back and join our Stargate family.

We have a guest host in this show, Dave Robison who co-hosts The Roundtable Podcast joins us and despite not having seen the show recently hardly missed a beat, lets face it once a Stargate fan always a Stargate fan:) The poll results are also included and while I personally don’t think the results were too surprising there were indications that humour as always scored well with the Stargate fanbase.

We got a voice mail from Brad from Australia who gave us his thoughts on the seventh season which was much appreciated, always a blast to hear our listeners own opinions and the itunes promotion is coming along nicely but we need more, many more:)

As of yet I have not decided what is going to be released next week, we have the Stargate Season Eight premiere episode recorded but we are trying to get someone to join us for a recording of SGA Rising. Since the unofficial voting for the episode schedule ended up as a tie we are probably going to be alternating on a weekly basis between SG1 and SGA. If things don’t work out then I may bring forward one of the specials we have recorded for the holidays to give us a little more wiggle room on the main episodes.

Finally a big thank you to everyone that has listened and contributed to our little show and the Stargate community as a whole, it is a passion we can all share.

Episode 153 Lost City Part 2

 Jack now armed with the knowledge of the Ancients continues the herculean task of piecing together the information in his overloaded brain looking to find the location of the lost city and through some clever out of the box thinking a planet is discovered. Thanks to the Jaffa they get a cargo ship and investigate this long thought dead planet and make a startling discovery one which changes everything but also provides the solution to defending the Earth from Anubis and his fleet of ships now orbiting the planet.

The second part of the season seven finale is a absolute cracker, lots of drama and humour with some very expensive but very impressive CGI effects and top notch set design and production. We have the search for the lost city which doesn’t quite go according to plan but does reward SG1 and the SGC with the means to save the planet while really setting the stall for the upcoming Stargate Atlantis spin-off series.

The Red Planet but it ain’t Mars

Credit once again to some excellent performances from both the regular cast and guest stars, the tension and drama in and around the Oval Office is riveting  and we get some good stuff from Kinsey once again when he faces off with Weir as well as showing his true colours when Anubis calls. We’ve often seen characters made or broke when faced with planet critical situations, it’s a little trite but it works for this show perhaps because they have been so well developed.

Ok who didn’t wipe their feet?

I dare anyone to watch this episode and not cheer during the final battle or even take incredible pride and satisfaction in the look Bra’tac has on his face as he sees the fruits of his labours and maybe the foreshadowing of greater things to come.

Ok then that was the final episode of the seventh season of SG1, next week we will have the wrap up show with a guest host and then to be honest we are still not sure, it may be a special episode or SG1 season 8 but we have to make up our minds soon. Episode 152 Lost City Part 1

 The discovery of a second location that houses an Ancient Repository of Knowledge has SG1 with support units travelling off world but they discover the device just as a Jaffa force from Anubis shows up and with few options Jack absorbs the knowledge and then fight their way back through the gate. Meanwhile the President has suspended SGC operations and replaced Hammond with Elizabeth Weir a civilian who has been responsible for high level international negotiations, she’s his choice for a public face if and when the secret is revealed to the world.

Bra’tac plays the SGC a visit and brings bad news, Anubis is marshalling his fleet and will arrive in three days to once and for all remove the Earth and the humans from the equation. The only possible solution is for Jack to provide the location of the Ancients Lost City from the data he now has in his brain before it kills him and much to Vice President Kinsey’s dismay Weir sides with SG1 and allows them to continue the search.

Lost only had a foot!

Lost City is a two part season finale and with the highest budget since the pilot we have significant expectations which the first part puts a very healthy down payment on. We get some very good off planet action with the attack on the Ancient world as well as some good character interplay from everyone involved. Weir played by Jessica Steen (only for these two episodes) proves she is a good choice putting aside possible political posturing to make the right call which Kinsey seems incapable of doing, great to see Ronny Cox once again chewing the scenery.

Pretty Woman on a budget

This double episode was packaged on the DVD as a feature episode, for our purposes we chopped it in half and wrapped up as Bra’tac and Teal’c take their leave with the goal to gather support for Earth from the free Jaffa. As we know the writers have systematically pushed away all of the Earth’s allies to make the planet stand alone, maybe one of the steps required to fulfil our potential as a galactic power and the fifth race.

This weeks promo is from Tyrion’s Landing a Game of Thrones podcast, they are currently going through some movies during the off season but well worth dipping into their back catalogue or just listening to their discussions on Harry Potter, 300, True Romance etc. Next weeks episode is Lost City Part 2 (no surprise there) and then it’s the season 7 wrap up show the week after so any feedback on the season finale or the season taken as a whole is most welcome. We are now on itunes would love to get some reviews and ratings, damn shame we lost the dozen or so we had before but they were a victim of an inconsiderate hosting company.

Episode 151 Inauguration

  A new President in the White House requires an ultra top secret briefing from the Joint Chiefs. President Hayes who has been elected along with Vice President Kinsey is read into the secret of Stargate Command and despite at first thinking he is having his leg pulled handles the revleations and pressures from vested interests very well. Kinsey with his lacky Woolsey attempts to spin the recent investigation their way citing numerous incidents pulled from the mission reports but the SGC have their own champions.

Inauguration is a clip show produced to save money which is required to fund the CGI budget of the season finale. In some cases this tends to provide us with a weak episode but a number of factors exist which makes this episode something of gem in an already strong season. This episode had it’s roots many years previously when the obvious need for a new commander in chief was first considered and this was an ideal time given that initially this was meant to be the last season of SG1 before becoming a feature. The biggest plus point for the episode is the casting of William Devane as the President, he plays the part magnificently and balances the wonder of learning of the Stargate as well as the determination required to handle the political aspects, we also have Robert Picardo back as Woolsey, James McDaniel as General Maynard and of course Ronny Cox spitting nails as Kinsey.

You’re kidding, right?

They really did pull a rabbit out of the hat with Inauguration, it could so easily have been a total lemon but turns into a very useful breathing space between the Heroes two parter and the Lost City two parter, it has humour, drama and top notch performances.

Episode 150 Resurrection

 A frantic call to the authorities has the NID and SGC investigating a run down factory unit which houses a secret research facility and oh yes around 30 dead bodies all killed it seems by a young woman housed in what amounts to a secure cage in the building. The sole surviving scientist a truly scummy individual plays silly buggers with NID agent Barrett and Sam Carter who are interrogating him about the woman and the cache of Egyptian artefacts which were believe to be sourced from the ill gotten gains of the Nazi regime.
Things take a turn for the worse when a device with the symbols of Ra is discovered and identified as a large scale explosive device and combined with indications that the Sekhmet symbiote was also part of the cache points to a wild and whacky DNA splicing experiment to create a human/goa’uld hybrid with access to the genetic memory. The young woman Anna has no memory of the bloodshed despite video evidence showing her cold bloodly shooting some scientists and Daniel believes her body does indeed house two souls, one an innocent human the other a millenia old symbiote.
Dr Keffler attempts to barter for his freedom until Daniel discovers what he had been doing behind the backs of his now dead colleagues and the sponsoring NID but the clock is still ticking on the bomb and the only way to disarm it is to bring out Sekhmet.

Finally Friends with Meditation

Resurrection is the one and only episode of Stargate that Amanda Tapping directed although she did go on to direct a number of episodes of Sanctuary. The episode was written by Michael Shanks and was the final episode produced in the seventh season adding more pressure to the cast and crew to get the episode done before production shut down. Two things are missing, the first is Richard Dean Anderson who had already packed his bags and returned home, the perks of being a producer I guess and of course the Stargate itself:)

Where’s Jack?

The episode was alas not that memorable to me, I couldn’t place it by name and it took a good 10 minutes plus before the plot was retrived from long term memory storage in my brain but there was excellent set piece shots created by Amanda from the initial ultra long crane/steady cam shot to the quite magnificent shots and lighting of Anna’s cage in the huge empty warehouse.

It was good to see Agent Barrett back again and there is even a little flirtation although Sam does inform him she has a fella even though we haven’t seen much of Pete recently and some obvious ramping up of the Jack/Sam dynamic. Teal’c and Dr Bill have some laughs which are used to lighten what is a rather dark episode dealing with genetic manipulation and murder not to mention trying to defuse a bomb which could take out Orange County.
