avatar The silence from the transplanted Taranin people worries Elizabeth and she sends the team to investigate, upon arrival they found the settlement empty but knowing it was built upon a huge complex of tunnels holds out hope that the people have moved underground perhaps to safeguard themselves from the Wraith. As the team searches the complex they detect a lifeform but then are attacked by a large creature, they wound it and as it flees they find a store room full of dead bodies, they have discovered the fate of the Taranins. In an adjacent room there is a large pod/cocoon and Ronon going walkabout finds the lab with the remnants of carnage and an Iratus bug in a container, having lost contact with the Marines sent as backup they return to the Stargate only to find that the control crystal of the DHD has been removed, they have no option but to return to the underground complex and search for whoever is responsible.

Vengeance (5)The culprit is revealed when her returns to find the destroyed remnants of his horrifying experiment, it’s Michael Kenmore who is exploiting the very technology that was used to create his own circumstance with a true megalomaniacs  desire to take over not only the world but the entire galaxy with his own genetically engineered creatures who are a mixture of Iratus and human. Teyla is isolated from the team and taken captive by Michael who as always had an affinity for her but now views her as an enemy and just one more ingredient to create more of his minions but after running battles, tense standoffs and lots of hide and seek the team evade the horde of creatures and using Michael’s own dart escape the planet and return to Atlantis.

Well Vengeance is a pretty dark episode, Stargate has never been afraid to move past the grey but we get a rather graphic display of the horror’s Michael is willing to impose on his captives. That said he is a creation of Carson Beckett who should probably have known better than attempting to alter a species so dramatically regardless of the threat they pose and it’s 50/50 if the Wraith as a whole or Michael as an individual is the greater threat. We got some high quality prosthetic and suit work in the episode from Masters FX and certainly the lower lighting conditions helped to sell the scenes the acting and stunt work combined with the makeup and pyrotechnics delivered a pulse pounding action sequence time and time again. As always Conner more than delivers a stellar performance, it may be the writing or he may have simply found the style of “Michael”, either way he is delivering a level of calm and controlled menace all the best bad guys have in spades.

Vengeance was a pleasure to watch and yes they made no bones about the casual lifting of ideas from the Alien franchise with their own particular twist of course:)

A big thank you to Shannon for joining us for the first time, a seasoned podcaster who despite some jury rigging was able to get into the swing of how we do things effortlessly. Our next recording will be for the Atlantis season 3 wrap up so the favourite episode poll is now up and running, it will close on the 16th of May so please let us know by voting which is your favourite S3 episode. This weeks promo is for the Voices of Defiance which is hosted by Shannon and they should return with new content in time for the third season of Defiance on Syfy and next week we have the Stargate SG1 series finale Unending, please join us for that and if you are going to give us some feedback that is the episode to do it for 🙂

avatar2 Infected after his encounter with the young wraith Ellia, John is slowly but surely losing his humanity as his DNA is rewritten to suit the needs of an Iratus hybrid. As his body changes so does his mind and despite himself he becomes a danger to his friends and the city itself and even with Carson and his team dreaming up wild solutions it doesn’t look good for him. Ultimately it’s his new form which allows Carson to gain the genetic material he needs to formulate a cure but it’s costs lives something John will have to come to terms with as will Lorne who commanded the mission and did what was required.

Conversion is a fairly strong episode in the second season and a good companion to the previous episode Instinct but it isn’t great mostly because the story demands a complete solution which is almost a reset at the end of the episode and Stargate stories always work better with consequences always being taken into account. That said we get some good interaction between John and Teyla and even better when he has to deal with Weir, there was always a possibility the writers would have paired either of these two strong women with John and in two different ways we see the potential. It was also fun to see Weir taking on Caldwell but you can’t really criticise him because he was right, maybe not tactful and considerate but that’s the military aspect I guess.

Now now, be gentle John

Now now, be gentle John

Perhaps one of the unintended highlights of the episode was John doing a passable imitation of Spiderman and then the intended light hearted view of Ronon being very cold and calculating when tracking down John which really showed us the differences between a Runner and the human contingent in the city.

They're there for John

They’re there for John

Conversion is worth watching when combined with Instinct, it has issues but we did have fun watching the episode and I think that always makes up for a lot of other issues. This episode of the podcast always includes a short review of the Stargate Atlantis novel “Brimstone” written by David Niall Wilson and Patricia Lee Macomber as well as some upcoming Stargate related birthdates.

Thank you to Brad for joining us on the show and as always a big thank you to everyone who has talked with us or contributed to any of our social media portals, we’re all part of the Stargate family. This weeks promo is for the new Star Trek Original Series podcast “Two To Beam Up” and next week we are back with the Stargate SG1 episode “Prototype” so we hope you can join us for that. Feedback would be greatly appreciated as would an itunes and/or stitcher rating/review, barring that enjoy the show and enjoy Stargate:)

avatar2 Thirty Eighty minutes is the length of time a wormhole will remain active without serious manipulation via huge amounts of energy to sustain it so when a puddle jumper is trapped in a space gate and partially within the event horizon the clock is ticking. To make matters worse Sheppard has been bitten by some sort of giant instinct which has disturbingly similar traits to the Wraith by feeding on his life force when it is damaged and even attempts to free the ship may implode it’s power core and the energy will feed back to Atlantis with catastrophic results.

Thirty Eights minutes is a very good episode to have in the first season of any scifi show, we get plenty of character development as well as action and brings in more secondary characters who may or may not been seen again and if so only seasons later. This episode also lays a lot of the practical groundwork for the emergence of the Wraith which went hand in hand with the genetic manipulation the Ancients did in the Pegasus galaxy.

Touch it, I dare you.

Touch it, I dare you.

Sheppard doesn’t really have much to do whilst strapped to the bulkhead of the jumper but is the focal point of the events onboard and also in the events on the Wraith world they visited, it was there that they realised that the “mountain” had been a rather large space ship which had pulled up it’s roots and flew away.

Wasn't there a mountain here?

Wasn’t there a mountain here?

We also get introduced to Dr Kavanagh played by Ben Cotton, he is written as a annoying individual and played wonderfully as such and of course Dr Radek Zelenka my personal favourite character from Atlantis played to a tee by David Nykel. The only really strange piece of the story is the clash of cultures between Weir and Halling although that was probably a ham fisted attempt to strengthen the events in the following episode.

This weeks promo is from the Saturday B Movie Reel a font of B movie scifi/creatures feature and disaster reviews. Thanks once again to Brad for sending us in an audio comment and for everyone who participates via the various social media portals. Next week we are going to be releasing a special episode in which we’ll talk about MacGyver and Richard Dean Anderson/Christopher Judge fifth season episode “Live & Learn”.
