Seizure

The crew of the Destiny have to deal with a holidaying Rush in the episode Seizure as well as fall out from events on the planet Langara.

Seizure

Homeworld command are in negotiations with Langara to use their world as a staging post for dialing Destiny thanks to the veins of Naquadria that run through the planet. Naturally given two worlds have already been destroyed the Langarans are not overly enthusiastic and are also under pressure from the Lucian Alliance. The military led by Telford favour direct action as they believe the Langarans are already dealing with the Alliance and so a plan is formulated by Dr McKay and put into action. On board Destiny Rush is having a day off and is using the chair to send his consciousness into the ship’s computer where his and Amanda’s bits and bytes can overwrite each other with abandon. When it’s time to leave Rush finds himself trapped in the computer with no control over the programme currently running and Ginn is desperate to get critical information to Eli before the system breaks down with catastrophic results.

Seizure is an entertaining episode with a fantastic guest star including Victor Garber, Robert Picardo and of course David Hewlett. It’s a pity Jack only gets a mention but the screen is certainly full of quality acting and some excellent location work in a former power plant (now a museum) which would be familiar to many a Canadian sourced tv series shown over the last decade. It was interesting to see how confrontational Homeworld was based on the belief the Langarans were double dealing and that based on very suspect intelligence gleaned from encrypted communications. In many ways it’s not a side of the SGC we want and leans more towards the dark days of the NID or maybe just the desperation by one or two individuals pushing an agenda regardless of the consequences. Helen Shaver did a magnificent job directing her first Stargate episode especially given the complexity imposed by characters who had backgrounds on SG1 and Atlantis.

Thanks to Brad for joining us on this weeks episode and for sending in the voicemail feedback for last weeks episode “Hope”. This weeks promo is for the SciFi Dig Podcast a long running show hosted by Aaron which has taken a lengthy break recently but back with a bang. Next week we are going to be watching The Hunt and as always we’d love to hear from you so leave a comment here or visit us on social media:)

avatar2 In Grace Under Pressure McKay along with Captain Griffen test fly a recently repaired puddle jumper when an engine malfunctions causing them to crash into the ocean between Atlantis and the mainland. The jumper quickly sinks and soon it’s transponder signal is lost to the scanners in the city and as they sink deeper the integrity of the ship itself is put to the test. Ultimately the damaged screen shatters and take the heroic Griffen to his death leaving McKay trapped in the rear compartment desperate to find a solution to the dilemma of limited power and life support and little chance of being located by his friends. It’s not long before the head wound and conditions have McKay hallucinating but in a twist he envisions one Samantha Carter who points out is the one person smarter than he is and coupled with his attraction to her perhaps understandable why his mind when down that path.

It's me baby!

It’s me baby!

Meanwhile back at the city John and company are devising a rescue plan based on some grappling hardware and the belief the jumpers were always intended to double up as submersibles. However Zelenka and his people have to jump through hoops to try and calculate a approximate position for the search to focus on but eventually John and Radek fly to the rescue and do a passable Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea impersonation but with clocking shields being used as physical shields the opposite of when the city re-tasked it’s shielding systems. Mckay continues to have lively discourse with his version of Sam and soon comes to understand decisions she is making are those of his own logical mind trying to keep him alive but eventually the jumper is almost flooded and hang on is John’s voice an hallucination and if he opens the rear hatch will he drown but does he have a choice?

Grace Under Pressure is in many ways a bottle show despite money being spent on bringing in Amanda and the use of the large waters tanks to simulate ocean conditions, it is perhaps to the credit of all involved such a complex story was told and told well. Yes we’ve seen the lone survivor having to deal with a crisis before on SG1 and the threat of drowning in a downed spaceship again SG1 but this take on those core elements works very well. David is one of the few television actors who could pull off such intensity and claustrophobic story both with humour and drama as and when required.

I want to thank Philip for joining me for the show, it took some organising but the recording went by without a hitch, he has recorded with me before on the episode Trio (an experiment) which again went well and will probably be used as our take on that episode of Atlantis. Big thanks to Misa and Dan for the feedback and a nod to Brad for the recordings which will be used in later shows but for now that’s this show wrapped up and as always we want to hear from you and if you can a review/rating on itunes would be most appreciated.  This weeks featured promo is for The Book Cave Podcast a show covering mainly pulp publications (books, magazines and comics) with author interviews and next week we are going to be looking at the SG1 episode Ethon.

avatar On this final bonus episode at least for now we are taking a look at an episode of the Canadian childrens series Goosebumps, you may ask why and the answer is simple as the episode “It Came From Beneath The Sink” features Amanda Tapping and Katharine Isabelle and was directed by David Winning. The series was based on the novels of R. L. Stine and offered four seasons of horror themed stories to add that little bit of spice to a young person’s television viewing, not intended for really young children but spooky and scary enough for those who recognised that television wasn’t real.

Goosebumps (1)

In “It Came From Beneath The Sink” a family move into a new home and the daughter discovers a strange sponge like creature resident in the house, it quickly proves itself to be anything but a playful pet and thanks to a little research by a young friend of the family and a disastrous attempt to rope in the schools science teacher the type of creature is discovered and a way to fight it is found which gives you a sort of happy ending. The show despite the spooky element has a lot of humour and this episode makes full use of the nerdy friend and lovable family pet “killer” who has more sense than any of the humans.

Amanda Tapping plays the mother of the family and it’s a pretty small supporting role, a young Katharine Isabelle is the lead in the episode and plays her part well and the episode is directed by David Winning who also directed the Stargate Atlantis episode “Childhoods End”.

Many thanks to Brad who joined me for this episode as Alan was doing his Discworld convention thing and thanks to everyone who has supported us over the holiday season by listening to the bonus shows, next week we go back to our regular Stargate shows with the Atlantis episode “Conversion”. Thanks for the feedback especially Brad and Dan for the voicemails and we would love to hear from you about our show and more importantly Stargate in all it’s flavours. If you fancy helping the podcast then an itunes review and/or rating would be much appreciated, same goes for stitcher and a simple tweet or mention on an social media portal would be most welcome.

One final mention for Brad who recorded a review of the Big Finish Stargate Atlantis audio drama entitled “A Necessary Evil” which was for an intended review show which never came about, the review was added to this show and the Big Finish productions are well worth checking out.
