avatar2 The Daedalus is undertaking a mission to oversee the testing of the Intergalactic Gate Bridge that is designed to use a series of stargates to cross the huge void between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies with a human built space station at its midpoint. They detect fast moving vessel in normal space heading towards the Milky Way and with some careful flying they make contact with the alien ship which is travelling at almost the speed of light, it slows and it turns out to an Aurora class warship called the Tria. When they arrive back at Atlantis the captain of the Tria and some of her crew beam down and after some pleasantries they take control of the city and pretty much kick the humans out but in a polite way. Woolsey is allowed to stay and act as a representative in the long term hope of allowing humans to return but in the mean time the Asurans are advancing on the city but the Lanteans are confident they will not attack due to the programming preventing action being taken against their creators but oops that was a mistake.

When the Asurans attack General O’Neill who is currently on Atlantis negotiating alongside Woolsey is trapped and despite the standing orders not to attempt a rescue Sheppard, Weir, Carson and Rodney steal a puddle jumper and use the Bridge macro to traverse the huge distance between the galaxies but pop out at the world where Teyla and Ronon are resident. Together they plan a very risky assault on Atlantis and after the initial attack they gain the support of Jack and Woolsey from within the city and the battle is on with the replicators, will they liberate the city before the star drive can be repaired and Atlantis flown back to the Asuran homeworld.

The Return was the mid season two parter and worked very well indeed, lots of drama, tension and action and thankfully we didn’t have to wait months between the two parts. It was great to have Richard Dean Anderson fully involved in Stargate and it was fun to see him work alongside Robert Picardo, the two of them were excellent together with the bickering and dry humour which only Jack really delivers well. It was a little surprising how quickly we once again lost access to Ancients (aka Lanteans) but once again their arrogance was their downfall but as we see throughout the franchise it’s a trait that hampers humans as well.

Many thanks to Miles for joining us for these two episodes, we had some technical issues which affected the recording but it didn’t turn out to bad. Well it’s the big one, a very happy birthday to the man himself Mr Richard Dean Anderson and I really don’t need to go into his resume, if you are reading this then you know his work be it the uber success of MacGyver and Stargate to the recent guest spots on Fairly Legal and not forgetting his charity work.

Don’t Trust the B…. in Apartment 23 was always a show I had planned to watch but it went they way of the dodo and alas even the very small cameo by Richard Dean Anderson wasn’t enough to get me to sit down and watch but here are a couple of screen caps, better than nothing:)

Gatecast Bonus 6 – The Simpsons

avatar2 Richard Dean Anderson guest stars in Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore a season seventeen episode of the animated comedy The Simpsons. He plays himself in a story which involves a Stargate SG1 convention in Springfield and the over enthusiastic attentions of two devoted MacGyver fans with the aid of some rope and a hammer. During the fun and games Mr Burns has outsourced the nuclear power plant to India and Homer as the sole union member who gets to retain his job is sent overseas to run the facility with some unexpected consequences.

The Simpsons is well known for making full use of it’s famous guest stars playing themselves and in this case spinning a Stargate and MacGyver tale around Richard Dean Anderson is inspired as it also pokes fun at the culture of fandom a few years before it really became well I guess mainstream and accepted in mass media. RDA has serious fun sending up his MacGyver persona the role which made him a global celebrity in the hit series. The second story in the episode follows Homer as he moves to India to run the outsourced nuclear power plant, a healthy dose of satire aimed squarely at the US and a few other societies that are pricing themselves out of manufacturing and maybe even seeing it as beneath them.

Next week should be the final bonus episode of this mini-break from dedicated Stargate episodes with a Burn Notice episode “Lesser Evil” featuring Michael Shanks as a guest star. We hope you’ve had a good christmas and we wish everyone a happy new year with special mention to those who celebrate other seasonal events, through the gate we are all one family.

Gatecast Bonus 5 – MacGyver

Welcome to the fifth bonus episode from Gatecast in which we are going to cover the Richard Dean Anderson series MacGyver. The format is pretty much the same as what we do for a standard episode of the show so it includes a commentary on the fifth season episode Live and Learn which has a familiar guest star in the shape of Christopher Judge. We’ve also included a little background information on both RDA and MacGyver but by no means are we experts and there is conflicting information on the web.

MacGyver premiered in the US in October 1985 on the ABC network and ran for 7 seasons with an additional 2 TV movies and became a world wide hit making RDA a global celebrity. Christopher Judge only made this one appearance on the show but if you go through the series credits you’ll see plenty of actors and crew that appear in this and the later Stargate shows.

This and maybe 2 more bonus episodes are going to be released over the holiday period in the hopes of first making sure for those that are interested in a little audio entertainment they have something from us but also to address the expected drop off in downloads of this holidays, it happens every year and we want to save the Stargate episodes for when everyone is back into the swing of things. I can’t for the life of me remember this episode and as fan of the series that’s not good unless it’s a shot from the episode were RDA guest starred, I’ll have to see if this is from one of the seasons I own on disk.
