Caught up with Saving Hope and yes I’ve seen the punch that has been a major talking point throughout the twitter feed but more importantly it was great to see Kate Hewlett guest starring on the episode Twinned Lambs playing Sarah a pregnant woman who has complications. The episode aired on CTV on February the 20th, no date for the UK airings as of yet.
I ordered a print of If Only an original piece of Stargate art work by Kimberley Jackson and it arrived yesterday, there are plans afoot to decorate and I’m indulging myself a little although at this stage no guarantee my ideas will come to fruition:) Regardless this is a beautiful print, it came framed as a canvas print measuring 40 x 30 cm and looks spectacular, the If Only image is a variant on her Stardust image which looks great but the more understated version suited my tastes.
As Gerak serves the will of the Ori it is left to the remaining Jaffa who see the threat to their hard won freedom to rally against their leaders. In a desperate all or nothing move they offer Gerak and the council a simple choice, reject Origin or slaughter thousands even millions of free Jaffa who are offering no direct resistance. As trouble is approaching over Chu’lak the SGC have deployed their anti-prior device and captured a servant of the Ori and taken a blood sample with the hope it will lead to a cure for the plague sweeping across the globe. However Orlin who is rapidly losing his mental capability fails in his task but when asked by Gen Landry for one last effort he travels to the Sodan world and faces down the Prior who reveals the intentions of the Ori in the Milky Way, convert the peoples and then strike directly at their former brothers and sisters now known as the Ancients.
Together they are Strong
The Fourth Horseman Part 2 is an excellent conclusion to this two parter, both of the main stories are wrapped up well with suspense and a significant emotional aspect which is one area where Stargate always does well. The sacrifice of Gerak after his face to face with Teal’c was an exception scene for both actors and huge praise to the simple yet oh so effective locations and props which helped to set the scene. Orlin played by Cameron again worked well within the story, his grand gesture in return to human form ultimately paid off but not in the way he intended, it was perhaps a little cop out to have the boy surviving and shades of the episode Learning Curve but The Fourth Horseman is at the end of the day about the hope that can now be drawn for a minor victory in this grade endeavour.
He used to smoke 4 packs a day!
We’ve included some feedback for last weeks show and of course a few of the more notable Stargate related birthdays for the upcoming week and also a book review of the novel Houdini & Lovecraft, The Ghost Writer written by Ron Wilkerson. This weeks promo is from our friend Nuchtchas with her show Nutty Bites and next week we are looking at the Atlantis episode The Hive which is it’s conclusion to their mid-season two parter. We’d love to hear from you about anything Stargate and/or Gatecast related including the opportunity to join us for an upcoming episode, let us know if you are interested and we’ll see what can be arranged:)
Many thanks to Laura who posted her exam project on Vimeo and tweeted the link, we follow her on twitter and she is nothing if not a perfect example of embracing life and all it’s opportunities.
The team is captured and taken off the world they were exploring by a group of unknown men, they awake inside a cavern and their nemesis if you will is revealed in the form of Lt. Ford who then goes onto to explain how he escaped from the Hive ship when he willingly jumped into a culling beam to escape being captured by Sheppard. The team are now being dosed with the Wraith enzyme as Ford believes only by seeing for themselves what the drug will do can the damage be repaired and he can be forgiven and accepted by those he once considered family. The first mission proves to be a success but from a technical standpoint very amateurish but John plays along hoping that the goal of destroying a hive ship with the use of a recovered Dart will provide a means to escape back to Atlantis.
The Lost Boys is the first of a two part episode and allows the show to bring back Rainbow for a very meaty guest starring role and goes on to dig deeper in to the merits of the Wraith enzyme and of course the ethics in harvesting the drug from the Wraith which begs the question who are the monsters praying on sentient beings now? It was a little disappointing how easily the team were originally captured but SG1 also had that problem at times but we did get some nice dialogue and action with the team dealing with Ford and his band of merry men who had achieved much in learning the ways of the Wraith. It’s understandable that both Ronon and Teyla would be seduced by the extra power and capabilities the drug gave them, they are both warriors and protectors were as McKay didn’t benefit as much, yes he gets stronger as we’ll see in the second part but it doesn’t accentuate his intellect which is his reason for being.
I told you I would be back
The Lost Boys as with many two parters suffers as it’s a vehicle to build the story which is going to be paid off in the second part but for all that it’s an entertaining episode and we get plenty of action and even some good Weir / Lorne dialogue and how great to see him with the viewpoint of what do you expect from Sheppard’s team, they are not punctual or by the book. It is without any doubt a very clever and well written episode to bring Rainbow back into the show and what’s more we get him again in the next episode of Atlantis with more of the same but raised a notch or two.
Foreplay Ronon Style
This weeks promo is from Flash Pulp and next weeks episode is the conclusion to the Stargate SG1 two parter The Fourth Horseman Part 2. Thanks for the feedback and again a very busy twitter feed, if you want to get in touch with us then please do so, always interested in chatting about Stargate and our podcast of course speaking of which if you would like to join us then drop us a line and we’ll sort something out.
Now isn’t that an excellent use of a Best-Lock Stargate product, many thanks to Christina who tweeted the image of his aquarium and a scene from Watergate 2.0
As always it’s such a pleasure to see the stars, guest stars and extras from Stargate making appearances on other shows, more so when it’s unexpected so watching the latest episode of Bones delivered the ever satisfying Robert Picardo onto my television. Robert was playing Dr. Lawrence Rozran in the episode “The Heiress in the Hill” which aired on the 31st of January on FOX.
So two familiar faces appeared on my television while I was playing catch up with the recently broadcast episodes of Supernatural and Psych. The first was Dan Payne a stalwart of the Stargate franchise albeit usually not playing an out and out human which strangely enough was the case in the Supernatural episode “Road Trip” and he defied my recent view that facial hair equates to evil:)
The second was Patrick Gilmore playing a character named Patrick who has a run in with Shawn and Gus early on in the Psych episode S.E.I.Z.E. The Day. Always a delight to see anyone from Stargate both from in front of the camera and behind practicing their craft.
In the middle of nowhere during a cholera outbreak who should I see but Aleks Paunovic playing a disgruntled rail worker named Anton Hersch in the season 3 episode of Hell On Wheels “Cholera”. It wasn’t a large role but as Anton he certainly offered an imposing presence when facing down the shows lead character and anti-hero Cullen Bohannan.
Hell On Wheels has finished it’s third season on AMC in the US and is just beginning it’s UK run on TMC and has been renewed for a fourth season.
I know I am a little behind after all the third season of Hell On Wheels finished a while ago but I’ve only just around to watching it, the upside is that I can marathon them and I honestly believe you get more out of a show without a weeks gap between episodes. Anyhow I just watched the first episode of season three entitled “Big Bad Wolf” and was pleased to see the name Tim Guinee appear in the credits, Tim is playing the slightly shady character of Collis Huntington a rival for our “hero” Cullen Bohannan.
Season three premieres in the UK on TCM 12th January at 9pm.
This weeks on Gatecast we have another bonus episode and the show will be a little longer than normal as the feature is a full length movie namely A Dog’s Breakfast. The movie was directed by David Hewlett and written by David and his wife Jane Loughman and was made in 2006 and after numerous festival screenings and huge fan support it securing a distribution deal and was released via streaming, vod and dvd within a number of markets. A Dog’s Breakfast was a project intended to fill the gap during the hiatus of producing Stargate Atlantis and in that regard they were able to secure a significant amount of hardware and talent not to mention roping in friends to make the movie come to life both in front and behind the camera. Kate Hewlett (Marilyn) stars with David as one third of the main cast with Paul McGillion (Ryan) as the final part of the trilogic in this kinda old school British domestic farce, additional support is given by Christopher Judge and Rachel Luttrell and lets not forget Mars the pooch who causes so much mischief in the movie.
I’m not going to go into too many plot details although we hope you’ve all seen the movie so lets just say any fan of the Stargate franchise should seek it out, it’s currently on DVD (R1 & R2) as well as various streaming options and hand on heart it is a very funny movie. David did actually write a script for the series ( Star Crossed ) shown within the movie and that would have been interesting as a Galaxy Quest type look at a scifi series as it was being made and shown but nothing came of it. We have yet to see a sequel although the movie may have been a little ahead of it’s time in terms of exploiting the fanbase and online options, it’s going to be interesting to see how Debug the Hewlett’s latest movie project fares if a widespread theatrical release isn’t on the cards.
David is the one on the right
Next weeks show will be another bonus episode (third of four) and it’s going to be the Andromeda episode “Day of Judgement, Day of Wrath” a third season episode which features Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge alongside the regular cast such as Lexa Doig. Brad will be helping us out with the show as Alan was in the process of moving to Finland so we hope you join us for that. So with christmas behind we wish everyone a happy new year and enjoy the last episode of Gatecast released in 2013.
It seems I am always playing catch up but I managed to watch an episode of White Collar tonight and Mike Dopud was the main guest star, granted he was playing a pretty much by the numbers bad guy but once again he proves how talented he is with his voice and mannerisms when portraying characters from various backgrounds. The last time I saw him on screen he was as western European as they come and this time Russian and I believed them both despite having seen him be “himself” I guess playing roles that didn’t need accent tailoring, mind you he is fluent in three languages so it’s certainly doesn’t harm his range:)
Together we are indeed stronger:)
Many thanks to SF Series And Movies for this Christopher Judge + Dalek + Trek merging of themes. Official Site Facebook
