The Russians are coming or at least their equivalent of a SG team after SG1 discover evidence that a previous Russian expedition (pre Watergate) had visited a world. As it turns out that team never returned and the spirit of co-operation they travel to the planet and attempt to enter the sealed pyramid (sorry Ziggurat) and reveal it’s mysteries. It comes as no surprise that the previous Russian mission came to a grizzly fate after discovering the truth behind this tomb but both SG1 and 3B1 are unprepared when they to get trapped and becoming the prey for a being millennia old with all the guile and hatred that goes with it.

We’re on a Snipe hunt!

The Tomb obviously starts to build on the events from the episode Watergate (S4E7) and the agreement with the Russians to acquire the gate lost in the ocean and begins a fairly long semi-regular arc as the secret of the Stargate spreads outwards. This eventually becomes a major part of the series leading to the multi-national Pegasus expedition we see in SGA and the IOA, lots more to come you see:)

The Tomb has all the feel of a good scifi flick where our gallant heroes are brought crashing to their knees when faced with an opponent they should be able to handle but location, conditions and plain ignorance gives them a decidedly visiting team disadvantage. That said the episode kinda sits in the middle, not quite the uber bug hunt it could have been or the internal conflict drama that it may have been shaped to be and thus is suffers a little. It’s still a fun episode and beautifully shot and has rewatchability.

Sam lets loose once again.

The Scifi Rewind is a collaboration between members of The ScifiDiner and Tuning Into ScifiTV podcasts (Scott, Miles and Kevin) and they will be covering Stargate the theatrical release in their next episode. Contributions and thoughts need to be in to them around the 15th of this month for inclusion in the movie discussion and if nothing else it’s another reason to see where it all began.

Visit The Scifi Diner or Tuning Into Scifi TV for their Rewind segments.

Daniel has been keeping a close eye on the Unas Chaka and his voyeurism pays off when his “friend” is kidnapped by humans with staff weapons. It takes some convincing but SG1 finally investigate and follow the men to their world an early industrialised culture that still uses slavery in the form of “wild” Unas. Playing the roles of traders they attempt to procure Chaka but are discovered and a clash of customs/beliefs occurs leading to the capture of Jack and Daniel. It’s time for the revolution when the slaves will fight for their freedoms led by a charismatic outsider, I’m talking about Chaka. We are joined this week by Adriana a fan of the series and of my co-host, I think we had a good time:)

Viva La Revolution

Once again the franchise exploits characters and stories from earlier episodes which I personally think is a bit of a no-brainer as it pays off for long term viewers and if written well can standalone for people new to the show. In this the Unas Chaka previously Daniels kidnapper now leader of his tribe is taken as a slave by other worlders and we get more or less a morality tale on the use of sentient beings and the vengeance factor by a people once themselves under the thumb of a system lord. The so called “bad guy” Burrock is played well be Larry Drake and we see a man hard by nature but true to his culture turn into a murderer which then allows the final resolution to play out without alienating the viewer.

Sam finally releases some tension

Dr Fraisers adopted daughter the “alien” Cassandra is celebrating her birthday but has adapted to human female teen traits and wants to spend more time with her friends and her fella. That special kiss on the front porch however goes awry and she ends up unconscious along with exploding light bulbs, mighty fine kisser that boy will become. Anyhow back at the SGC the team explore the possibility that her planet holds the key and they do indeed find a mysterious and hidden lab in the forest which leads to a discovery that becomes a minor part of the mythology of the Goauld.

Ikea’s new range

It’s always tricky to have a teenager in this type of show and balance an interesting character with all the stereotypes you may expect from such a person and they just about pull it off. The big plus point for this episode is the callback of Cassie and her continued life with Janet so that strengthens the appeal of the Doctor as a series regular. The second benefit is to tie together another System Lords antics with the long term goals of the SGC which opens up more extensions to this storyline, always a good thing.

All in all Rite Of Passage is a fairly good episode, it lacks a little in the script department and has a lot of scenes which rely purely on the onscreen action (or even lack thereof) with just the soundtrack but it did go by quickly which speaks volumes.

That’s a big one!

Christopher Judge joins ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ cast

Batman-News.com.

Call me over excited but it’ll be great to see Chris on the big screen in a major movie not that I don’t appreciate his appearances in more budget conscious projects:)

Michael Shanks pops up all over the place, Amanda has her success with Sanctuary and RDA pretty much has been living the good life only Chris has kept a comparatively low profile.

Joseph Mallozzi Reveals More About ‘stargate: Extinction’

Joseph has revealed a little more of the background to the proposed SGA movie “Extinction” which would have followed on from the season 5 finale aka series finale episode.

On a personal note still debating buying the SGA Blu-ray boxset.

Perhaps there are some things you should not tamper with without the complete specs or instruction manuals but the lack there of does not stop the SGC from over riding lock out protocols on the gate and dialing. The results don’t seem too bad until minutes after arriving on Ktau the sun turns red casting the world into shadow and pretty much heralding the end times to the inhabitants who honour the Asgard created mythology.

Red Sky is a standalone episode which draws on the existing canon in regards to the gate system and the Asgard and certainly echos the season 1 episode “Thors Hammer” which is never a bad thing. We get to meet some more of Thor’s people and the Asgard puppets are getting really good with some top notch facial expressions most of which anyone who talks to Jack for any length of time would recognise.

Engaged in all out fire fight with some Jaffa SG1 beat a hasty retreat but Jack and Tyler are left behind unable to reach the gate. The rest of SG1 are desperate to return with more men but no one in the SGC admits to knowing who this Lt Tyler is and the question becomes who or what is going on. Until the truth can be discovered Jack is on his own which when you think about it is probably something he is well equipped to handle considering his background.

The Pyro guys had lots of fun

The Fifth Man follows a style that has been used often in Stargate with a very definite two story theme but with a strong link which keeps all the main cast members busy. Jack is in all out military mode which the rest of SG1 along with the SGC face the new political reality which comes from the character of Simmons who straddles military and civilian aspects. While both stories are strong it’s when the two merge we get an uber pyrotechnic and stunt filled episode which is a joy to behold whilst retaining some of the character and depth we are used to when SG1 meets new people. John De Lancie again is great as Simmons while Dion Johnstone usually seen under heavy prosthetics shines as Tyler proving once again Stargate does know how to cast it’s guest and supporting roles.

I’m sure I left SG1 around here somewhere..

Dean Devlin the writer of the original theatrical movie which eventually spawned the TV series hints at a future for the theatrical side of the franchise. Not sure I agree that the original cast could be the focus of a new movie but they could certainly add some flavour.

Investigating an alien world with a devastated civilisation SG1 explore a city and find evidence of Ancient writings and maybe even technology. Sam mysteriously collapses and is told to take some time off and only then does she meet the mysterious figure who seems to be capable of some strange things or is he a figment of her stressed imagination. Either way the SGC investigate and that draws in the NID who as always take it one step further and maybe ultimately make all the wrong decisions.

Ascension is a solid Sam episode in which we get to see her home (believed to have been her Dads before he went Tok’ra) as well as her vintage motor underlining Sam’s status as far more than a career soldier. We also get a lot of background to the actions and motivations of the Ancients which are very different to what we have previously experienced via Oma Desala but set the basis for stories to come from both aspects. A new NID presence in the form of Simmons (John de Lancie) spells trouble as it’s obvious he is slicker and more devious than those we have met before, a reasonable face on the shadow organisation.

The secondary plot points tend to revolve around humorous aspects with Teal’c and Jack especially the Star Wars and Pizza scene:)

More news on the upcoming SGA Blu-ray boxset due for release on the 26th of July. It is currently being offered for a paltry £79.93 from Deep Discount with free p&p for US customers. A rather attractive price I have to say:)

Safely returned to Earth SG1 along with the renegade Tealc face the reality of his betrayal but help is at hand as Bratac comes a calling with his version of tough love. Through a life threatening procedure Tealc is forced to recall the events which shaped him and without the direct influence of the symbiote maybe he will be able to reclaim his mind.

In essence Threshold is part three of a trilogy of episodes which started with the season 4 finale but by itself it’s an excellent example of flashback footage (mostly new) integrated with an ongoing story. There is lots of Teal’c back story which fleshes out the events which led to the galaxy changing events when a first prime defied his god and came to the aid of 4 humans from Earth.

Concerned yet still humourous

Threshold is mighty fine episode, I’ve always loved the flashback style which Joss Whedon seemed to pull off with ease via Buffy and Angel and this is a good example of the style of story telling. Lots of humour as you would expect as well Peter Deluise getting involved which is a skill that guy has perfected:)

In a galaxy far far away SGC, Tokra and Gouald strive to survive and find a way to leap home but the locals have something to say about the new kids on the block. Welcome to the premiere episode of season 5 as Apophis with Tealc in tow and a captured SG1 face the deadly threat of the wee beasties who are happily cannibalising their ship one wall at a time. A stroke of luck provides a way to return to the Milky Way galaxy and Apophis’s homeworld which then gives SG1 the opportunity to address the situation in a most satisfying manner.

Enemies is without doubt one of the great SG1 season premieres, even if you put aside the extensive use of CGI (which was beautifully done) the set design and camera work were all beautifully synced to an engaging action driven story with humorous pauses as is the style of the show.

Bones would not approve

Enemies now sets up the next episode as the SGC have to deal with a rebel Teal’c and the ramifications amongst the System Lords of these events and the season takes a step forward in the political influences via the uppity NID with it’s closet agendas not to mention another new Tok’ra character (Ren’al). It’s going to be another good season of action, laughs and more depth to the stories, welcome back:)

No one or thing messes with Teal’c

Stargate Goes Up For Sale…in Pieces | CINEMASPY.COM.

Another dark day for the franchise but maybe a great day for fans who missed out on the recent propworx auctions, alas it looks like you’ve got to be there in person which limits the opportunities to get that last piece of fandom.

She looks great in Goa’uld – Boing Boing.

Not overly practical but that has been a kind of trait with the system lords, appearance is everything. I’m not sure modern fashion is ready for a return to the Egyptian styles but given what we’ve seen in Stargate there are certainly some impressive costuming possibilities.
