Intervention

The second season of Stargate Universe begins with the episode Intervention. In terms of the show it is technically the final part of a three part story which encompasses the finale of the first season and the beginning of the second. Most of the expedition have been stranded on an alien world and after a power struggle amongst the alliance a number of the invaders are also marooned including Varro.The remaining Lucian Alliance still retain partial control after the ship was saved by Greer and Scott by adjusting the shields on the outer hull. Rush now begins to reduce the energy to the shields which will eventually allow the radiation to kill the crew or at least those who are not in a more secure location which is where Rush and company are going to hole up, as he says to Dannic those that are not safe are a necessary sacrifice. Dannic refuses to give up but is then killed by one of his own who then turns over control of the ship to Rush and they then gate back to the planet to retrieve the stranded people. Young returns to discover that TJ has lost the baby.

 

The secondary or maybe primary storyline in Intervention is centered on TJ who is unconscious in the med bay after being shot and losing her child. She awakes in a cabin and is greeted by Dr Cane who tells her she has been brought to the world they visited earlier in recognition of her sacrifice by returning to Destiny. Her daughter is alive and well and she is told that her child “Carmen” will be allowed to stay but TJ had to return to Destiny. She finally wakes up and indeed she is on Destiny and yes her child died due to the trauma of the bullet wound but something calls to her and she struggles to the main viewing port and sees the same nebula that was revealed to her on the planet…

Intervention is an excellent episode to begin the second season of Stargate Universe, we get some action and full introduction to a few new players in this part of the story such as Ginn and Simeon. Varro continues to be the sensible and intelligent alliance member and one who Young could probably work with but that’s some way away, at this point keeping them confined is the only safe option barring abandoning them on a planet just as they were.

The mystery of TJ and her child will remain just that for quite a while but the writing provides the viewer to follow the more scientific or mystical path as they so choose which gives plenty of options further down the line as the season develops. Overall we got a very good episode, great effects and character interaction, new characters making their mark and opportunities for the writers to expand in many directions and maintain the mystery that is Destiny.

avatar2 The Odyssey arrives at the coordinates of a reported ORI supergate but they only discover a neutron star which affects the ships shields and sensors and then they come under attack by three alien starships, they evade but run into a minefield, a mayday is sent to the SGC who then lose contact. Onboard Anateo and his men murder Colonel Emerson to force Carter to remove the transponder and repair the damage to the ship and as the transponder broadcasts the position of the Odyssey  it allows Vala to use her contacts and secure a less than space worthy cargo vessel but before they make contact the Odyssey as indicated by the transponder moves and they follow, it leads them to a “chop shop” for spacecraft and Vala along with Daniel get captured leaving Teal’c and Cameron to devise a drastic plan to infiltrate the Lucian Alliance who were behind the ambush of the Odyssey. Cameron using the Reol chemical which when injected into a target makes them see who you want them to see plays the part of the major Lucian operative Kefflin who is a friend of Netan the current leader. When Teal’c is captured he is only saved from torture thanks to the intervention of “Kefflin” aka Cameron and things continue to go wrong when the bounty hunter/dodgy dude Tenat arrives and provides the location of the Odyssey but having seen Cameron before he confronts him and for a price agrees to go along with whatever deal Mitchell has got going. Meanwhile Sam has freed some of the captive crew and the retake the ship and Vala takes a risk in beaming Anateo off the bridge and out into space when the plan was to beam Sam to safety, it works but before they can get underway Netan arrives but again the Reol chemical comes in handy and the two Ha’tak begin firing on each other and the Odyssey beams Teal’c and Cameron aboard and jumps into hyperspace.

Oh, the Earth is now at war with the Lucian Alliance…

Company of Thieves is another of the Lucian Alliance episodes but has a lot more meat on it’s bones, this is perhaps the first time we see them as a strong force with some very intelligent people in positions of power but without the communal self interest this “organised” crime syndicate are more interested in their own power bases and that provides the chink required for the SGC to pull their proverbial out of the fire. It’s a pity Anateo played by Rudolf Martin wouldn’t be returning, he played quite an entertaining villain and was perhaps more dangerous than Netan in the big picture but that was the problem, the tenth season had become an ORI arc and the alliance were really only a side show so they always have to be played down or a way found to negate their impact on the Milky Way while the fight for the galaxy continues.

Overall this was a fun and exciting episode, some good call backs and excellent guest and recurring actors, Teal’c got captured and tortured again and they even acknowledgment his issues with his role in these plans and of course the murder of Anateo was quite cold for a scifi show with a firm family audience, quite unexpected but probably deserved after he ordered the death of Emerson. We are going to see more of the Lucian Alliance in the years to come but they never really made their mark on SG1 and this was perhaps their best episode in terms of dramatic effect.

Dan LaRock joined us for the first time for Company of Thieves, he said he was nervous but came through the recording session with everything intact and I believe he will be very happy with the result, hopefully he’ll return at a later date and in that respect if anyone out there wants to join us for an episode then by all means get in touch, we’d love to have you on and we’ve proved timezones and locations can all be worked around. Gatecast 222 SG1 Off The Grid

avatar Various planets around the galaxy are reporting a raising concern of Kassa which is a vegetable currently very popular thanks to it’s inherent addictive properties and the question is asked if this is a naturally occurring resource being exploited by a criminal enterprise or perhaps a round about way for the ORI to disrupt and manipulate populations that are not already within their fold. SG1 go undercover to P6G-452 a known producer of Kassa and in a rather short sighted move Cameron decides to pose as a buyer and attempt to gain the contact information of someone higher up the kassa producing food chain. It goes badly and SG1 has to aggressively retreat to the Stargate which then is beamed away by an unknown third party leaving them to be tortured for information they do not have. General Landry talks to the captured Goa’uld  Nerus who reveals that he had been working on an idea to reprogram stargates to create an independent network that could not be directly accessed via the existing galaxy spanning system, it seems that Ba’al has begun implementing such a system by stealing gates for the new network. The Odyssey is sent to rescue SG1 even though it’s still under going it’s flight trials but they recover the team and thanks to the General tagging Nerus with a tracker within a cupcake they are able to find the location of Ba’al and a mission is launched to recover the gates but they find themselves in the middle of a shooting war between Ba’al’s ship and three Lucian Alliance ships and time is running out.

Off The Grid is an action packed adventure for SG1 including gun battles on the planet and yes they get captured although it has to be said you don’t really plan for the Stargate to vanish during your tactical withdrawal. The CGI ship battles in space looked excellent and it’s always been great to see the running fire fights along the corridors of a Ha’tak. The General deserves a lot of credit in this episode, he made the decision to send the Odyssey an unproven ship and manipulated Nerus who isn’t stupid just has quite a large blind spot when it comes to certain aspects of his life. Cliff Simon once again rocks as Ba’al the system lord with all the charm and smoothness the bad guys in any story should have in spaces and of course we know that seeing him die really isn’t the end of his tale.

Gatecast 198 SG1 The Ties That Bind

avatar2 It looks like Daniel is finally free of Vala but after she leaves the SGC he collapses in a manly fashion and upon awakening Vala is once again by his side, it seems the effect of the bracelets has continued perhaps due to the influence of the communications stones. Thus begins a journey for what will become the new SG1 as they track down the man who Vala stole the bracelets from and he in turn agrees to help if they can return a necklace Vala stole, this leads them to a trader who wants a power coil in exchange and then a cargo ship for the coil and at each stage the “treasure hunt” gets more dangerous.

The Ties That Bind once again proves how well suited Daniel and Vala are in terms of a love/hate relationship even if the love part is always well buried, the chemistry between Michael and Claudia is well used and provides lots of humour and some drama with more to come. The adventure the soon to be SG1 embarks on is also full of it’s own humour and more importantly begins the Lucian Alliance aspect of Stargate be graphically showing that these guys are not some two bit operation, they have resources at their disposal and as mentioned lots of people looking for work and to make money in a galaxy with it’s former structure ripped apart.

It was great to see Wallace Shawn appearing on the show playing the part of Arlos Kadawarn a former love interest of Vala complete with interpretive finger play which make everyone a little uncomfortable, he delivered some great dialogue and was perhaps the highlight of a very good episode. His performance takes nothing away from Bruce Gray, Malcolm Scott and Michael P. Northey who had wonderful supporting roles and played opposite Vala with style and how great was it to see the return of Jup and Tenat who once again come out of a deal with nothing and having to explain themselves to the Alliance.

SGU Incursion 1 (Syfy Broadcast)

The first of two part finale as we see the resolution to the interrogation of Telford and Rush preparing the LA gate for connecting to the Destiny. Once again we see how the inclusion of familiar faces from SG1 really adds to the atmosphere of the story and come on seeing Sam and her 303 gearing up for combat brings back all those good memories.

The LA board Destiny thanks to Rush but out of character (or was it) Young refuses to kill them all by venting the atmosphere as Telford was with him, it would be nice to think Young is mellowing but perhaps too early for that. It’s great to Rhona Mitra (Kiva)  kick ass (come on we all fell for her as Lara Croft) and the mystery walk about by Eli and Chloe plus the spooky flesh burning radiance are really building up the expectations for the finale.

Of course the big question is why do the LA want the Destiny, it’s slower than their existing fleets, it’s weaponry is inferior so what do they know we don’t..

A guest star studded extravaganza as the stones really pay off bigtime and threads started in the pilot are taken up and run with. The episode seemed to fly by so when it ended we’re really in the cliffhanger what happens next phase and it’s certainly going to be interesting when these groups finally meet.

The LA agenda, no idea, don’t really understand why they want the ship.
