avatar2 Sam, Jennifer and Rodney pay a visit to M5V-801 to confirm to the local population that the mining work the Genii forced upon them two decades previously was going to have grave consequences for their settlements. However on their way the grounds collapse and the three of them find themselves in an unknown abandoned mining complex with little to help them escape. They try to improvise a number of ways to reach the glimpse of sunlight far above their heads but the results are all negative and bring a fresh collection of injuries and the situation continues to get worse. The building they are in is on long stilts which are slowly giving way as the load increase thanks to soil pouring into it from above but maybe the way out is to be found by going deeper rather than higher.

Trio is very much a character piece, pretty much a one location show and allows the already established dynamic between Rodney and Sam to flourish making it very easy to ease Jennifer into the group and a by product is that it opens up the possibility of a relationship between Rodney and Jennifer especially after he made so much of a mess with Katie a few weeks before. The show was also intended to be a bottle episode, limited sets and guest stars but logistically it turned into a nightmare, very complex set pieces and a lot of CGI to removes wire work from the scenes where it was impossible to use doubles. Overall though while at times it can feel a little stretched the story is entertaining and offers up a lot to the regular viewer of Atlantis, maybe not so much to a first timer viewer.

Many thanks to Phil for joining me on this show, this was his first time on Gatecast but since it was recorded in January 2014 not the first time you’ve heard an episode he has been on. This weeks promo is for the Sci-Fi Movie Podcast and next week we are going to be joined by Brad for the excellent Midway, let us know what you think since it’s been gratifying to get some feedback these last couple of weeks:)

avatar2 In Grace Under Pressure McKay along with Captain Griffen test fly a recently repaired puddle jumper when an engine malfunctions causing them to crash into the ocean between Atlantis and the mainland. The jumper quickly sinks and soon it’s transponder signal is lost to the scanners in the city and as they sink deeper the integrity of the ship itself is put to the test. Ultimately the damaged screen shatters and take the heroic Griffen to his death leaving McKay trapped in the rear compartment desperate to find a solution to the dilemma of limited power and life support and little chance of being located by his friends. It’s not long before the head wound and conditions have McKay hallucinating but in a twist he envisions one Samantha Carter who points out is the one person smarter than he is and coupled with his attraction to her perhaps understandable why his mind when down that path.

It's me baby!

It’s me baby!

Meanwhile back at the city John and company are devising a rescue plan based on some grappling hardware and the belief the jumpers were always intended to double up as submersibles. However Zelenka and his people have to jump through hoops to try and calculate a approximate position for the search to focus on but eventually John and Radek fly to the rescue and do a passable Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea impersonation but with clocking shields being used as physical shields the opposite of when the city re-tasked it’s shielding systems. Mckay continues to have lively discourse with his version of Sam and soon comes to understand decisions she is making are those of his own logical mind trying to keep him alive but eventually the jumper is almost flooded and hang on is John’s voice an hallucination and if he opens the rear hatch will he drown but does he have a choice?

Grace Under Pressure is in many ways a bottle show despite money being spent on bringing in Amanda and the use of the large waters tanks to simulate ocean conditions, it is perhaps to the credit of all involved such a complex story was told and told well. Yes we’ve seen the lone survivor having to deal with a crisis before on SG1 and the threat of drowning in a downed spaceship again SG1 but this take on those core elements works very well. David is one of the few television actors who could pull off such intensity and claustrophobic story both with humour and drama as and when required.

I want to thank Philip for joining me for the show, it took some organising but the recording went by without a hitch, he has recorded with me before on the episode Trio (an experiment) which again went well and will probably be used as our take on that episode of Atlantis. Big thanks to Misa and Dan for the feedback and a nod to Brad for the recordings which will be used in later shows but for now that’s this show wrapped up and as always we want to hear from you and if you can a review/rating on itunes would be most appreciated.  This weeks featured promo is for The Book Cave Podcast a show covering mainly pulp publications (books, magazines and comics) with author interviews and next week we are going to be looking at the SG1 episode Ethon.

I ordered a print of If Only an original piece of Stargate art work by Kimberley Jackson and it arrived yesterday, there are plans afoot to decorate and I’m indulging myself a little although at this stage no guarantee my ideas will come to fruition:) Regardless this is a beautiful print, it came framed as a canvas print measuring 40 x 30 cm and looks spectacular, the If Only image is a variant on her Stardust image which looks great but the more understated version suited my tastes.

avatar2 The Stargate activates and an old and void IDC code is received, it used to belong to Sam Carter who is obviously mystified but things become a little clearer when the MALP reveals a human form replicator at the other end of the wormhole and she was created in Sam’s image. She requests death at the hands of the SGC using the Asgard/Ancient created weapon but with such a valuable resource within reach Jack with a lot of prompting from Sam agrees to let her interrogate the replicator in the hopes of ultimately defeating this menace to the galaxy.

Damn, always wanted to be a Ginger.

Damn, always wanted to be a Ginger.

Gemini is from a production point of view a highlight of the season, some excellent camera and post-production work to get Amanda looking right when there are two of her on screen using a variety of techniques to make it work. Her own performance is outstanding as well providing two sides to the Sam Carter personality as is the subtle makeup which certainly sets the two women apart. Teal’c has a strong role in this story as well being the counter to Sam’s headlong rush and total belief in repli-carters word, of course knowing oneself makes it easier to deceive by providing all the right answers even to questions not directly asked.
It all goes pear shaped of course more so for the put upon Fifth whose only really two “relationships” both turn around a bite him, few men or man like beings get shafted twice by Sam Carter.

We were joined by Brad for this episode, he was up in the wee hours to record with us in our late afternoon, huge appreciation and once again we are always looking for a guest on the show, it works better with three voices at least I think it does.
This weeks promo is from The Saturday B Movie Reel a podcast which reviews and chats about the scifi/creature and disaster features which turn up so often on the Syfy channel, lots of fun if like me you love these sorts of movies:)
We’d love to hear from you so please get in touch, we can be found well here, on Facebook, Google +, Twitter, Stitcher and of course itunes which if you would like to leave us a rating/review would be most appreciated.
Next week we are going to discuss the Stargate Atlantis episode The Defiant One, please join us and spread the word.

Sam has her newly delivered ACME Road Runner Kit but alas no instruction manual. ACME was mentioned when we recording the episode so I thought I would have a little fun, I am no artist hence the pretty weak cut and paste job:)

Sam J Jones celebrates his birth today (august 12th), I am sure you’ll know him from the wonderfully over the top movie Flash Gordon which may have restricted his long term movie career but certainly gave him status and recognition in the genre. Within the Stargate realm he played Aris Boch in the SG1 episode “Deadmans Switch” who was a bounty hunter that got the better of the Jack and Co as well as sticking it to a system lord:)

Also on the 12th Casey Dubois who played “Wex” the young boy featured in “Rising” and “Hide and Seek” the first two episodes of Stargate Atlantis celebrates his birth. IMDB

15 Meme of Amanda Tapping

There are some nice images here which define her character quite well, maybe not in the Trek league but still a lot of fun.

While investigating a world with what looks like Ancient technology SG1 meet a scientist who is conducting his own investigation of the device but unknown to them he has a goal and is prepared to do anything to achieve it. Activating the device causes Jack and Tealc  to repeat the same day over and over with a bemused SGC to contend with everytime but day by day they learn what they need to know to break out of the loop and it allows them the opportunity to do stuff with no direct consequences be it golfing through the gate or smooching Sam.

Windows to the Soul

Robin Mossley is the main guest star of this episode and plays the alien scientist Malakai who believes himself capable of harnessing the machine despite the Ancients abandoning it and does a very good job in the role. This episode of the cast also has a guest, Daniel Waller a listener and contributor to the show joins us for what is arguably the most popular episode of Stargate made, certainly one of the funniest.
