avatar2 It’s that time of year again and the first of our seasonal bonus episodes will be an episode of Seaquest. The show is an American scifi series set in the near future about a state of the art submarine and it’s crew in a world that is significantly different from ours yet the people are very much the same. The particular episode is from the second season called “Vapors” and stars four of the DeLuise clan beginning with Peter and Michael who are regulars on the show with Dom as a major guest star and David appearing in a bit part. In Vapors Tony (Michael) is asked by his father Nick (Dom) to help him with a problem as his mother is taking some drugs which are causing a few problems. Tony takes Lucas and Dagwood (Peter) along with him on this adventure and they visit Buddy’s a dance club and smoking establishment which is managed by David’s character. This story is a lot of fun and exploits the dynamic between the DeLuise family and does overlap with the other story line which deals with some of the issues with Bridger (Roy Scheider) and the ships CMO Dr Wendy Smith (Rosalind Allen) with further emotional ups and downs with other members of the ships crew leading to a get together at the end of the day at the Captains beach house.

A Grand Day Out

A Grand Day Out

Vapors is a fairly decent episode for someone new to the series to begin with, it’s pretty much standalone and in many ways does act as a little primer but of course the ship and crew we see in the second season is very much different to that of the first season and more so in the third season. Seaquest had many ups and downs during it’s three year life on television even with the Spielberg name involved but they aimed high and many times hit the mark by providing good adventure stories backed with science and environmental themes to educate and entertain the audience.

His Best Friend is a Dolphin

A huge thank you to Thomas who recommended this episode for a bonus show and for joining us to record the show, always tricky to sort out a time with someone in the US or any country with a significant time difference but rewarding when it all works out. Next weeks bonus episode will be the Hewlett movie “A Dog’s Breakfast” and that’ll be just me and Alan doing the commentary, it will be a longer episode as you would expect and hopefully worth the extra time to listen too:) Links…

Least we forget those who have passed on, the great Dom DeLuise ( Aug 1st 1933 – May 4th 2000 ) a husband, father and of course Urgo in Stargate SG1.

A big and inspiring birthday to Jason Momoa who graced our screens as Ronon the Runner from Sateda in 78 episodes of Stargate Atlantis. He then went onto play Conan in a movie that wasn’t as bad as critics made out but probably become better known for Drogo in the HBO series Game Of Thrones.

In remembrance of Dom DeLuise who would have celebrated his birth this day. A comedic genuis who had a long tv and movie career and took on the role of “Urgo” in the Stargate SG1 episode of the same name, if nothing else he fathered Peter, Michael and David who to various degrees contributed to the Stargate family.

SG1 step through the gate and reappear in the SGC, a mystery to them but more so for Hammond who tells them they have been gone for hours with no contact. They then start to hear voices, well one voice talking to all of them and Urgo appears before them an entity only they can see and much hilarity ensues.

Without any doubt Urgo is a comedy episode especially written to exploit the talents of Dom DeLuise the father of Peter who has directed and worked with the show for a while now. The story is undemanding but in essence only exists to allow the cast to have fun ad-libbing and basically goofing off, Teal’c the perennial straight man has probably the easiest episode of the series requiring only use of expressions. The only negative as Alan points out time and time again is that if you are not a fan of Dom then the episode can fall a little flat but if you are a fan it’s a blast.
