avatar The long range scans from Atlantis picks up a Hive ship stationary in deep space well away from any planets, the tracker embedded in Todd is pinging from the ship and as it shows no sign of movement a team is sent to investigate. While John and company are gearing up he puts his foot down with Teyla and clearly states that her pregnancy negates her going on this mission, he points out she may be the last of her people and she and her child can not be put at risk, she disagrees. Upon arrival the team discover a damaged Hive with dead Wraith onboard and the tracker lying in a pool of organic goo on the bridge fall, it had been torn out of Todd either by him or by who ever attacked the Hive ship. They seem quite pleased, while the Hive is damaged it’s not a write off and well Ronon said he didn’t touch anything but hey presto the intended destination of the Hive is on screen and indicates a highly classified Wraith complex. John after returning to Atlantis approaches Teyla and asks her to return to the Hive and use her talents to pilot the ship, she agrees and finds that her pregnancy seems to have increased her ability to merge her mind with the Hive control systems and the ship is much less stressful to fly. They arrive at the system where the complex is housed and find that a Hive ship is in orbit and the planet has a space gate, they take a cloaked jumper down (Teyla and Lorne stay onboard the Hive) and the team infiltrate the base and discover the usual creepy corridors and a number of birthing facilities. They also discover a huge chamber full of what look like cocoons or pods each holding a Wraith, McKay tells them that there may be over a hundred of these chambers in the complex meaning potentially thousands of Wraith. It turns out that Todd (who they find in a cell) had stolen a couple of ZPM’s from the Asuran homeworld during the battle and the complex needs ZPM energy levels to power this complex which uses a Queen to create a template Wraith off spring which is then cloned on a massive scale. Todd had planned all this but had been betrayed by one of his own who now serves the Queen in this base and before they can sabotage the complex they are stunned and imprisoned yet Todd manages to escape and make his way to the Hive with Teyla on board. The Queen interrogates the team and just before she feeds off Rodney her mind is taken over by Teyla using her enhanced mental strength to control a Wraith yet the mind battle goes on, a duel of wills which continues as the Queen releases the team and then just before she regains her being John empties his clip into her and they flee. They get to the Hive just in time for the other Hive to commence attacking but they can not leave without destroying the complex, they get into the jumper and send their Hive plummeting into the surface of the planet vaporising the complex. Todd once again lives to complicate matters another day and Teyla realises that she can not be act as if she only has to look after herself and teammates, she has a duty to her unborn which slightly alters her opinion on how John had treated her both as a friend and colleague.

SpoilsOfWar (21)

Spoils Of War is pretty much an unofficial third part of the mid-season two parter but then again this is serialised drama so it’s uncommon for episodes to be closely related just not quite this much. Not for the first time Todd is actually played by Brendan Penny and voiced by Christopher Heyerdahl and I’ll admit until doing the podcast that fact totally passed me by, in my defence first time around I wasn’t watching the show on a large tv or in HD and I was never big into forums and such like so a lot of trivia was passing me by. We got another Wraith Queen again played to perfection by Andee Frizzell who really got the malicious vibe on overdrive when she was confronting Teyla, that was perhaps more intense that her confrontation with John and Rodney. The sets and the visual effects were all good quality, not fall out from the high costs of recent episodes but it has to be said the Hive smashing into the planet could and should have been rendered to a much larger scale, this was a global killer not just a rather large boom. Mind you the look on the Wraith when he was told the Hive they were targeting was flying straight towards them was priceless:)

The episode is a very solid fourth season offering and it was good we got a little more balance to the Teyla situation, up to now it was all big bad John but as first Ronon gave her his support John had to admit he was perhaps a little too overprotective but on the flip side we did get to see Teyla also acknowledging her obligation to the child. All this had to be resolved as this aspect of the character and story is going to become very important as the season wraps and the fifth kicks off.

Many thanks to Jeff for joining us this week, we had a little technical hiccup about 9 minutes into the recording and I admit I panicked a little when I couldn’t find part of the recording but once I realised it had saved under a totally different naming format it all worked out ok. This weeks promo is for the SciFi Diner podcast and next week we are going to be talking about Quarantine which is a change of pace for the show, hope you join us for that and please let us know what you think, we want to know:)

avatar2 The fourth season of Stargate Atlantis sees the city adrift in normal space after her hyperdrive engine cut out, it turns out the Asuran energy beam caused significant damage to the primary power conduits of the city and there was simply not enough energy getting to the engines to keep the city in hyperspace. As the fly through local space with no way to call for help they discover that while the damage can be routed around after a lot of hard physical work the clock is ticking as the city is pumping energy from the ZPM to maintain life support and other functions. The city reduces shield coverage which causes the death of three technicians working on one of the piers but an approaching asteroid field has all the jumpers launching and trying to clear a path, the desperate attempt is partially successful but the unprotected parts of the city suffer considerable damage and yep one of the towers houses a control unit that has to be bypassed. Zelenka and John go for a space walk and while they achieve their goals it’s not without injury. Oh, did I forget that Elizabeth is all but dead and Dr Keller encourages Rodney to reactive the nanites in her system despite John’s vehement refusal as he sites the risk but it’s done and Elizabeth awakes fully healed, she is not entirely happy looking at the big picture but it seems the nanites can not communicate with the Asurans and maybe there is hope for everyone. The hyperdrive capable jumper which Rodney tried to develop when under the influence of the Ascension device has limited functions and the Asuran homeworld full of ZPM modules is within range.

Guy with the brush, sweep harder!

Guy with the brush, sweep harder!

Adrift is great start to the fourth season, while the CGI is a little hit and miss when it’s hits it hits big time and combined with the drama of their escape from the Asurans and the deaths and consequences the episode is packed and I really can fault the overall production. It was great to see John and Rodney facing eachother down, maybe the first time they have had a serious disagreement and imagine it over Elizabeth being saved or allowed to die and a nice touch to have Ronon give the emotional side, that was very satisfying but watching him walk around aimlessly in the background of so many shots was just too funny for words. The asteroid field was an idea that for me didn’t really work but it was an action sequence in an episode that was a lot of talking heads but the simpler tower leap by Zelenka and John was far more impressive, it says a lot that the Stargate inhouse and third party CG designers have set the bar so high. I was amazed John did not recognise the address for the Asuran homeworld and on the surface a covert strike to steal a ZPM sounds like suicide but what options do they have and they do have the ace in the hole if they can trust her.

Thanks everyone for listening to our take on Adrift, we would love to hear what you thought about this episode of Atlantis and our own take on it and if you want to join us then feel free to get in touch. Many thanks to Brad for joining me on the show as Alan has returned home to the Republic for a short visit with family, this weeks promo was for the Saturday B Movie Reel and next week I am joined by a new guest Ian for the Atlantis episode Lifeline, hope you join us.

avatar The team led by Major Lorne is believed to be dead after their dwelling in an off world village is burnt down leaving bodies with the appropriate dog tags and then an unexpected communication from Ladon Radim who was one of the Genii that attacked Atlantis under the command of Koyla offers an opportunity for the expedition to get their hands on a ZPM, the offer is too tempting so they respond and learn he is planning to depose Cowen and take over the leadership of his people now significantly reduced after a recent culling by the Wraith. Teyla and Ronon investigate the surroundings and circumstances of the death of Lorne and his men while Weir and Sheppard deal with Ladon eventually coming to a deal but with little intent on honouring it and of course it all goes badly when the Genii sent to collect their supplies are found to be terminally ill and of no use as a bargaining chip for the ZPM. The tables are turned when it is revealed the Genii are behind the “deaths” of Lorne and his men as they are attempting to get access to the gene therapy and by capturing John and his men thanks to the failed raid for the ZPM Cowen returns front and center as mastermind of the whole convoluted plot. We are not done though, even Cowen has under estimated his own peoples loyalty and as Ladon said he does what he does for his people and eventually that means taking the Genii down another path one which may include a more trusting partnership with Atlantis.

Coup (35)

You will die Mr Bond

Coup D’etat is an excellent episode of Atlantis weaving together former races and characters who over the first two seasons have played a part in the growth of the story, we had the welcome return of Cowen after Ladon was elevated to a more prominent role which worked very well adding to the culture of the Genii and taking nothing away. The plot of the story was twisty to say the least but you did have to over look quite a few things yet even after seeing the episode so many times it loses nothing in it’s use of the twist and the slightly unexpected choices made by characters some you know very well. Coup D’etat won’t be the last time we see the Genii again but it is the last time we meet them as a people which is a shame, granted they were a little too gung ho but they could have been an asset in the galaxy wide Wraith conflict beyond a short term supplier of nukes.

This weeks promo is for the Warp Ten Podcast which is a lot of fun but not for kids and next weeks Stargate episode will be “Arthur’s Mantle” in which an Ancient device causes all sorts of problems with added zombies:)

Many thanks to everyone who chatted with us on Facebook, Google+ and over on Twitter especially those who retweeted our links and spread the word of Stargate. We are looking for anyone to join us for S10 of SG1 and S3 of Atlantis, move voices in the show would be most welcome so please get in touch if you fancy coming back or joining us for the first time, all you need is Skype and a microphone so these days that could be as simple as a smartphone upwards:)

avatar2 The team discover a portal on a remote ancient world and with no sign of danger John attempts to pass through but is dragged in and lost to the group. McKay discovers the mechanism and the consequences of using the portal and realises that if they don’t find a way to bypass the portal’s effects within a few hours they will never see John again. Meanwhile John is making new friends and battling a beast that has the capability to become invisible and seems to be immune to physical weapons and he’s emotionally hurt as well, he doesn’t understand why his friends have seemed to have abandoned him. The silver lining is that there is a particularly attractive woman who shall we say has designs on him and a much younger one with healing hands, a little meditation and a lack of a razor hardly seems a great trial.

MALP on a Stick

MALP on a Stick

Epiphany is an enjoyable episode of Atlantis, it really is an episode that benefits from a superb location and all the benefits of modern television production can bring. The CGI and wire/stunt work give some good action set pieces and also allows for the more quiet moments between John and the inhabitants of this Ancient world to really leave their mark. The desperation amongst the Atlantis personnel works well, it’s difficult for them to understand fully the consequences which I guess also allows for the key points to be explained to them and by extension the audience who are picking it up as the story unfolds.

She knows what happens next.

She knows what happens next.

The only real problem with the story is why Teer would even consider John as being ready for Ascension, yes we know he is a lot more intelligent than he lets on and has the courage and belief to face down his fears but I don’t we’ve had any indication ascended beings have anything like a normal life once risen. Lets not forget John is still a material guy, his living in the now one reason why the meditation aspects of the lifestyle proved to be a little more taxing for him:)

We got some feedback via Facebook and Google+ so thanks for that and as always lots of Stargate chat thanks to Twitter. This weeks podcast promo is from The Rusted Robot and next weeks show is the Stargate SG1 episode Ripple Effect and Thomas joins us for that, hope you tune in:)

avatar2 The members of SG1 are stuck 5000 years in the past but in this alternate timeline dorky Daniel and Sam after helping to discover the location of the second gate are put onto the expedition thanks to Jack returning to the military which in turn is thanks to Major Kawalsky his long time friend and compatriot. The use the jumper to travel to Chulak in search of Tealc who they believe will be open to helping them but on arrival they are captured by the Jaffa of Apophis and Daniel is take for interrogation and then when they escape he reveals that his no longer the Daniel we knew for such a short space of time. In a clever tactic they take the jumper 5000 years into the past of Chulak and use the gate to travel to Earth and they appear shortly after the original SG1 arrived but find that well they did not fare very well. Only Daniel survived which means once again we have a full compliment of SG1 to rally the natives to rebel and over throw Ra but this time to use the Jumper and it’s cloak to secure the gate and make sure it will be discovered under the cover stones 5 millennia later. A blink of an eye later here is a SG1 watching the video of themselves recovered from a dig site and well everything seems to have worked out so lets all go fishing and they do including Sam but there shouldn’t be any fish in this pond…

Close enough?

Moebius Part 2 is a fantastic season finale and watch together the two parter is brilliant time travel science fiction. It was great to see “evil” Teal’c once again as the First Prime to a snazzy looking Apophis played by Peter Williams who refused to cut his hair hence the use of the fancy hat. We lost Daniel and gained Daniel and lost Teal’c, Sam and Jack but hey we are back to a full compliment of SG1, come on don’t you love time travel tales:)

Who is Missing?

Who is Missing?

The episode has for the most part stunning levels of location shots, composite scenes and set pieces although one or two shots were a little sub-standard as Peter commented on in the episode commentary, budget and practical limits played a part but next season a full size location jumper will solve many of these mainly for Atlantis.

As a season finale the episode was awesome and a lot of the credit goes to the final fishing scene and slow pull back across the pond and we’ve seen that shot before but it doesn’t matter it works so well. If this had been the series finale it would have worked just as well, the story and conclusion providing a fitting end to SG1 and passing the torch full time to Atlantis.

As it should be

As it should be

Once again we have to thank Scott and Miles for joining us in the recording of this show, they were excellent and with fewer audio issues the final result was more to my liking. We may have to try to convince them to make another appearance some time in the future:)

Next week we take a leap at the Stargate Atlantis season 1 finale “The Siege Part 1” with Jeff from the states joining us for that recording, hope you can join us and maybe leave a comment, review or any sort of feedback I can’t tell you how much it means to us. Thanks to Brad for posting his mini-feature on Gatecast 106 “Menace” over on the Facebook Group and thanks to everyone that we interact with us on twitter and Stephen for the email:)

avatar The death of Catherine Langford provides Daniel with a treasure trove of Egyptian artefacts to examine, in one book he spots a representation of what could be nothing but a ZPM in the treasure room of Ra. Sam and Daniel offer up a plan to use the Ancient time machine to go back 5000 years to the time when Ra ruled over Egypt and steal the ZPM without affecting the timeline, Jack isn’t convinced but he is the best bet to fly the time jumper.
They successfully steal the ZPM but they remain 5000 years in the past when the Jumper is discovered, they decide to leave a video recording in a sealed jar in a known dig site with the knowledge it will be discovered by their future selves and then all will be right with the world.
Alas they have changed events and when the jar is discovered the video referencing the Stargate, SG1 and some of the major events are no longer relevant but General Hammond (1 Star stationed at NORAD) seeks out Sam and Daniel to shed some light on the video and some of the artefacts they do discover.

Moebius1 (5)

Moebius was initially intended to be a series finale and even with seasons nine and ten to come the double episode really can be seen to book end what to many became the traditional Stargate SG1. That aside we are seeing a truly convoluted and magnificent time travel story which is one of the staples of scifi but is often forced to work or plot issues ignored. In this story we see the consequences when things go wrong and how far you may have to go to try to fix things and even then it might not be perfect. If modern theory about alternate timelines and branching realities are true then the odds of perfectly replicating the events to produce a desired result with 100% accuracy would be pretty long almost at infinity. It may the case that like the Moebius as a whole and the Simpsons episode referred to in the commentary for part 2 that close enough is the best you can hope for.

Michael and Amanda must have been having a blast playing the alter-egos being more timid and restrained versions of the characters we came to know and love. We can see Daniel has that desire and stubbornness still buried within him but Sam despite being a very intelligent woman seems to have had her confidence and edge ripped away, who knows how her family life in this reality affected her.
Jack we can see as being an extension of his existing character, he’s happy to have walked away and just do enough to get by and be happy on his boat but for some reason seems to have picked up a Canadian accent for some reason. It was also great to see General Hammond who was pretty much the same just a lower rank and of course we got to see Major Davis and Major Samuels who seemed to be very similar but then in the prime reality they like the General were military men to the core. McKay of course reverted to his early SG1 arrogant self maybe even with added jerkiness:)

Wandering Hand Syndrome

Wandering Hand Syndrome

Moebius Part 1 is an excellent episode and the first half of one of the best two parters that Stargate have produced made more so thanks to wrapping up so many threads in a very natural way, some of the best series finales leave you smiling and believing the characters will go on and in part 1 all the hallmarks of this style of story have been laid down and we have the promise of more of the same in part 2.

We had some issues with the audio (again) this week, I lost quite a few comments which simply were washed out so the show really doesn’t do justice to our two guests this week. Miles and Scott from the SciFi Diner podcast joined us from the states and they’ll also be on part 2 of this episode so if you really want to experience the quality they consistently produced check out their podcast which carries some excellent genre interviews gathered from dozen of conventions. Thanks to everyone that has posted on the various social media platforms and gold star to Brad for continuing his episode comments over on our Facebook group, all the feedback is valued and appreciated.
Next week we’ll be staying with Stargate SG1 with the second part of Moebius and then the following two weeks will be devoted to the final two episodes of the first season of Stargate Atlantis.

avatar2 The team visit the planet Dagan whose address was given to the expedition by past or was it future Elizabeth, time travelling does complicate things.
The world is the home to a people who now worship the long lost Alterans and consider the ZPM a religious object but are prepared to help the team believing they are the original inhabitants of Atlantis, of course Rodney talks too much which leads to the final not so beneficial results.
Koyla is back on Genii and thanks to their extensive network of spies hears of the Atlanteans visiting the world and launches an unauthorised mission against them both to gain the prize but also to extract some vengeance against John.
Rodney impresses one of the local women but totally fails to spot an opportunity and well once gone it’s gone forever so it’s back to puzzle solving, lots of digging in the dirt and fighting for your lives. Meanwhile a Wraith dart on a one way long range recon scans Atlantis before destroying itself and with the new long range scanners the city detects three hive ships on their way, the clock is ticking.

Mood Lighting Bad Guy 101

Mood Lighting Bad Guy 101

The Brotherhood is a mighty fine episode, we have the Dagan story which as intended has the Indiana Jones vibe with puzzles, exploring, double crossing and the ever present threat from the bad guy but also a little tension and action with the Wraith threat to the city. Koyla played by Robert Davi once again steals every scene but ultimately fails thanks to his lack of flexibility in some areas but he gets away so we may see him again. It was fun to see Rodney being rather appealing to an intelligent and resourceful woman, too bad for him that small window went unnoticed because she has her own agenda once she learns the truth thanks to Rodneys inability to keep his mouth shut or understand why they were helping the Atlantians in the first place.

She actually likes our Rodney

She actually likes our Rodney

We got a voicemail from Brad who is making up for not being on a show recently and a little discussion over on Facebook so life is good but the more discussions and feedback the better so please feel free to get in touch in what ever way appeals. This weeks promo is from The Holodeck and next weeks episode is The Reckoning Part 1 which is technically the first part of a trilogy even though the third episode has a different title.
Anyway, enjoy the podcast and enjoy Stargate.

avatar2 During a routine recon of a world with a space gate the jumper comes under attack by Darts which are subsequently destroyed by a powerful energy based weapon seemingly from the planet below. The team land to investigate but find only a primitive agricultural based culture with no obvious technology but in their midst is a being who is believed to be the intermediary between them and their supreme being.
Is there an advanced being protecting this world either technology or spiritually based is the question and upon returning to Atlantis the answer will be revealed.

Timeshare Opportunity

Timeshare Opportunity

Sanctuary is an entertaining story but not that original, we’ve met Ancients who while not freely operating in the galaxy do have influence in the physical world, Oma Desala and Orlin have appeared in SG1 and in this case Chaya Sar is the first Ancient the expedition have direct contact with. As with the other instances it’s a case of Chaya Sar breaking the rules of her people and being punished with banishment and the eternal care of the people she broke the rules to protect. It’s a clever idea and punishment and also explains why she took the risk to appear to John and the rest of the expedition, for all her many charges Chaya is lonely and the chance to return to the City was too much to resist.

Well hello there

Well hello there

Sanctuary throws up some good shippy moments as John does his best Kirk impression and Rodney points it out so once again the franchise grounds itself in our world by referencing scifi pop culture rather than ignore some obvious comparisons as others show have done. While we can place the episode in the overall framework of the Ancients storyline it is standalone which is a pity, I liked Chaya and Leonor who portayed her but perhaps it was the right decision, any action she took in aid of Atlantis would have brought disaster to her planet.

We got some feedback via our facebook this week and an audio message from Brad, thank you everyone keep it coming it’s great to read or listen to peoples views on our show and more importantly Stargate. The promo this week is from Trek News and Views a friend of Gatecast and next week we return to Earth for the SG1 episode Full Alert and the return of Kinsey.

avatar2 A routine recon through the gate leads to the jumper being disabled by some form of advanced energy dampening device. Stranded on the world the team discover a society of young people no older than 25 who believe that if they kill themselves on their 25th birthday it maintains a community that is too young for the Wraith to being interested in culling. McKay discovers an ancient type device powered by a ZPM which is powering the shield and it’s that which has kept these people safe from the Wraith, maybe should not have turned it off and taken the ZPM to Atlantis. Meanwhile a power struggle between the current leader and next in line leads to an open confrontation between bow and arrow armed youngsters and the P90 equipped SG team while Wraith probes scan the planet for food.

Childhoods End was the only episode of Stargate directed by David Winning and it received many plaudits for the direction. It is a very highly produced episode, the location shooting of the camp is very well done and there is some top notch matt paintings as well a very atmospheric lighting effects. Perhaps the highlight is McKay’s interaction with the two children who pretty much act exactly like kids exposed to new people and new things, intense curiosity classes with the typical McKay intolerance but this time chocolate comes to the rescue.

Atmospheric woodland.

Atmospheric woodland.

I certainly would have liked to see David Winning direct more Stargate episodes but it never came to pass for whatever reason but everyone involved with this episode worked well and we got an entertaining story with a little backbone although there were certainly deeper aspects to explore if the writers had gone that way.

Jack now armed with the knowledge of the Ancients continues the herculean task of piecing together the information in his overloaded brain looking to find the location of the lost city and through some clever out of the box thinking a planet is discovered. Thanks to the Jaffa they get a cargo ship and investigate this long thought dead planet and make a startling discovery one which changes everything but also provides the solution to defending the Earth from Anubis and his fleet of ships now orbiting the planet.

The second part of the season seven finale is a absolute cracker, lots of drama and humour with some very expensive but very impressive CGI effects and top notch set design and production. We have the search for the lost city which doesn’t quite go according to plan but does reward SG1 and the SGC with the means to save the planet while really setting the stall for the upcoming Stargate Atlantis spin-off series.

The Red Planet but it ain’t Mars

Credit once again to some excellent performances from both the regular cast and guest stars, the tension and drama in and around the Oval Office is riveting  and we get some good stuff from Kinsey once again when he faces off with Weir as well as showing his true colours when Anubis calls. We’ve often seen characters made or broke when faced with planet critical situations, it’s a little trite but it works for this show perhaps because they have been so well developed.

Ok who didn’t wipe their feet?

I dare anyone to watch this episode and not cheer during the final battle or even take incredible pride and satisfaction in the look Bra’tac has on his face as he sees the fruits of his labours and maybe the foreshadowing of greater things to come.

Ok then that was the final episode of the seventh season of SG1, next week we will have the wrap up show with a guest host and then to be honest we are still not sure, it may be a special episode or SG1 season 8 but we have to make up our minds soon. Many thanks for the feedback and continued support via twitter, facebook and google+ but now we need itunes reviews/ratings and there may be a carrot dangling for those who think we are worth a few minutes of typing.

Thanks to Tuning Into Scifi for providing the promo, a great podcast with other titles under it’s wing, well worth checking out.
